How to Wash a Vintage Stuffed Animal

While there are many methods of cleaning stuffed animals, experts agree on one thing: always be gentle when cleaning vintage stuffed animals. Some experts may recommend using detergent for delicate and fine washables, or even foaming carpet cleaners. However, these can leave residue behind which will attract dirt. Washing with plain water works well, is very gentle and will not leave behind any residue that dirt will adhere to. You also do not have to worry about over-wetting the stuffed toy as you try to rinse soapy water or foam cleaner off. For valuable toys you may want to find a professional to clean and restore it rather than do it yourself and risk devaluing the stuffed animal.

Instructions

    • 1

Inspect the stuffed animal for any loose seams, eyes or holes. Repair any of these before cleaning.

    • 2

Vacuum the toy with a hose covered with thin material, such as pantyhose to remove dust.

    • 3

Use a damp washcloth to test for colorfastness in an inconspicuous spot of the stuffed animal.

    • 4

Wipe the fur with a damp washcloth, cleaning small sections at a time and turning to a clean spot on the rag frequently. If you prefer, you can gently mist the fur with a water bottle and wipe it off. With either method avoid getting the backing of the fur fabric wet. Change the washcloth to a fresh one and go over the animal again if needed. Even if the toy is still dirty, do not continue cleaning if it means getting the stuffed animal too wet.

Let the stuffed animal air dry fully. This may take a day or more. If the stuffed animal is still dirty once it is fully dry you can repeat the cleaning process.
