Vintage GI Joe Identification

The action figure GI Joe has been around since 1964. Hasbro is the original maker and still is, however they have been made in Canada as well and occasionally under the name Hassenfeld Bros, Inc. The term action figure was originally used for these dolls that are based on WWII military men.
  1. Types

    • The original Joes were based on the four branches of the military. The vintage dolls come as Action Joe, Soldiers of the World, Action Pilot, Action Sailor, Action Marine, GI Nurse and Action Soldier.

    Features

    • The vintage GI Joe's have color molded hair with movable parts. They were packaged in individual boxes with a plastic window overlay. The images on the package are of realistic military scenes.

    Changes

    • By the 1970's, these dolls had beards and mustaches as well. Their hair was still molded, but now it was painted instead of colored plastic. Also, all figures came with accessories, such as guns, ammunition, letters, bags and gear.

    Size

    • The vintage GI Joe's are 11 1/2 inches tall (later dolls are 12 inches tall). The original Joes have large bodies and thick hands and feet. However, they are not muscular; their arms and legs are smooth and without definition.

    Considerations

    • While looking for vintage GI Joe's you may also want to collect the accessories. There are foot lockers, weapon sets, jeeps and extra clothing. Keep in mind the price too. Rare dolls, such as GI Nurse, and older dolls in mint condition and original packages can be expensive.
