Barbie the Gambler With Sunglasses
Make a poker-playing Barbie with the addition of sunglasses, a deck of cards and a fanny pack. The sunglasses are simple to make. You need three measurements. The first is from behind the ear to the front of her face. You multiply that number times two. The second is the distance across the front of the face. Add that to the number you found when you multiplied by two to find the length of the sunglasses. The third measurement is the distance across the bridge of Barbie's nose.
Create 2 circles 3/8 inch in diameter. You can use the end of a pen as an outline. Draw the two circles on heavy-stock poster paper in your choice of color. The distance between the two should be the measurement across the top of the nose. These hold the lenses for the sunglasses.
Decide the shape of the sunglasses. If you want the lenses round, simply draw the line across the top the length you calculated in step 1. Center the line so it's equal on both sides. Draw a small bulb on the end. Draw a second line 1/8 inch below the first and connect it at the ends. This is the basic sunglass template. You can create any shape lens you choose or design for the frames.
Make the lines for the design of the lenses. Cut out the glasses you created and the section for the lenses with a craft knife.
Cut out a piece of clear plastic in the color of your choice slightly larger than the opening for the lenses. Cut out clear self-adhesive paper larger than the lenses. Lay the colored lenses in place on the back of the glasses. Put the self-adhesive paper over the lenses and frames to hold the lenses in place. Trim away excess.
Fold the sides of the glasses to make the earpieces and place them on Barbie's head. You may have to trim a little. Slide the ends into her hair to maintain the position.
Make Her Fanny Pack
Select a piece of material for her fanny pack that is at least 4 inches long and 3 inches wide.
Draw a pattern for the fanny pack. The pattern is a cross. The main post is 1 1/8 inches wide and 3 3/8 inches long. At 7/8 inch down at one end, draw a line that extends 7/8 inch on each side. At 1 3/8 inches down, draw a second 7/8-inch line on each side of the main post. Connect the two lines on each side with a line across the end. This now forms a cross with the arms 2 7/8 inches across.
Pin the pattern to your material and clip it out. Once you cut it, clip 1/8 inch into the base at the top and bottom of the arms. Clip again from that point. This time clip into the arm 1/8 inch. This allows for 1/8 inch seams for Barbie's fanny pack.
Turn under the edge on the ends 1/8 inch of the arms and top and bottom of the main post, putting wrong side to wrong side. Stitch it down with tiny stitches.
Lay the fabric with the right side down. Bring the short end of the main post up to form a corner with the arm and pin the right side of fabric with the right side on the arm. Do the same on the other side. Stitch it with 1/8-inch seams.
Clip 2 pieces of 1/4-inch wide ribbon that are 3 inches long. Pin the edge of the ribbon to the top edge of the side of the arm that you haven't yet sewn. The ribbon remains on the right side of the fabric, inside the pouch you create when you stitch the seams. Bring the long end of the main post up and form a corner. Follow the process on the other side. Stitch this using 1/8-inch seams.
Turn the fanny pack right side out. Turn under the raw edges on the long portion 1/8 inch and stitch. Fill the fanny pack with material. Put it on Barbie and attach the Velcro self-hooking tape to the ribbon waistband so it fits her perfectly.
Barbie's Cards
Cut 52 rectangles out of heavy paper. The size for each is 3/4 inch by 1/2 inch.
Use a rubber stamp and red or blue stamp pad to decorate the front. Allow it to dry.
Divide the cards into 4 stacks of 13 each. You'll need a black marker and red marker for the next step.
Decorate the face of the cards with the symbols for a deck of cards. Use the red for hearts and diamonds and the black for clubs and spades. You can get fancy and draw on the king, queen and jack. If you wish, use the Google images in the resource area below. You may need to shrink them slightly. Cut them out and paste them on the front of the card.
Lay the cards on top of the sticky side of clear self-adhesive paper. Put a layer on top of the cards and press to seal. Trim the cards out of the self-adhesive paper. Set Barbie at the table with a straight flush. Create a sign that says "World Series of Poker" for the final touch.
