My Little Pony (MLP) dolls have been made by Hasbro since 1982. With their pretty manes, fanciful names and civilized tea times, they became beloved by girls all over the world. Whether you're nostalgic for your youth or just want to play, here are some tips for building a collection.

  Familiarize yourself with the lingo to make your online search a bit easier. MLP dealers use abbreviations when describing their offerings. Knowing the terminology can let you know at a glance when a pony was made, what it looks like and how rare it is.

  Check out some MLP enthusiast message boards. There is a thriving trade of MLPs online where you can buy, sell and swap ponies from every generation. Make a wish list and browse for an item that belongs in your collection.

  Comb through second-hand stores and garage sales to find vintage 1980s ponies. Though demand for these dolls has spiked, you just might get lucky if you are patient and keep your eyes open.

  Buy a pony on eBay. If you haven't had any luck finding ponies for cheap, you might see what the professionals are charging. Collectors and vintage stores have drastically driven up the cost of MLPs; on the other hand, they offer a great selection.

  Attend the My Little Pony Fair, an annual collector's convention. Hob-nob with other collectors, trade tips and debate how much you'd pay for Cherries Jubilee. There are even representatives from Hasbro on hand to answer questions.
