How to Hand-Bind Your Own Comics

Despite a desire to protect their investment, comic book collectors often find themselves putting their comic books inside plastic bags in a nondescript cardboard box tucked in some out-of-the-way space. One alternative storage method is to bind those precious editions. You can perform the binding process yourself and thereby preserve your comic books.

Instructions

    • 1

Gather the volumes you want to bind. Use the straight edge and craft knife to cut off the stapled spines of the comic books about 1/8 inch from the edge.

    • 2

Remove any unwanted pages, such as pages of ads or letters.

    • 3

Stack the pages neatly, making sure the spine is even.

    • 4

Wrap a piece of heavy card stock around the comics, folding sharply at the spine. Make the spine no more than about two inches thick. Trim as needed and remove the cover for the moment.

    • 5

Cover the spine of the comics with bookbinding glue or rubber cement, making sure not to get any on the pictures.

    • 6

Wrap the card stock cover around the comics, pressing against the spine.

    • 7

Stand the comics up on the spine and put a heavy wooden block on either side of the book to keep the pages and cover straight. Let dry.
