DIY Comic Book Case

As a comic book collector, you know that some issues are highly valued. To keep these highly-prized editions in pristine condition you want to display them safely, and you can do this by making an acrylic display box and setting the comic book inside. Place this case on a coffee table or desk or stand it on a bookshelf for other people to enjoy, but remember to keep the display case out of the bright sunlight as it can damage the front cover illustration colors.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut two pieces of acrylic sheet to 10 inches by 12 inches. A typical comic book measures 6.6 inches by 10.25 inches tall, but you want the case to be slightly wider than the comic book so it is attractively displayed. Use a metal razor or adjustable hand saw to cut the acrylic sheet.

    • 2

Spread black, blue or brown velvet fabric on your work space and cut it to 10 inches by 12 inches. Spray adhesive on the bottom acrylic sheet including all the edges and corners. Spread the velvet on the acrylic to adhere it in place. Make sure the velvet side is facing you.

    • 3

Cut two side acrylic panels that measure 10 inch by 2 inches. Use your cutting saw to do this. Cut an additional 2 side panels that measure 12 inches by 2 inches for the other sides.

    • 4

Glue the panels to the bottom acrylic sheet using acrylic glue. Hold each piece in place as you glue it until it adheres to the bottom piece. Allow the bottom and side pieces to dry for 48 hours before adding the top acrylic piece.

    • 5

Place two clear acrylic or metal jewelry box hinges on the inside side panel of the acrylic box. Mark the location you will glue these in. Place a drop of acrylic glue to the inside side of the acrylic side panel where you will place the top hinge. Adhere the bottom side of the hinge here. Hold the hinge in place until it adheres. Follow the same process for the bottom hinge.

    • 6

Close the hinges and place the top acrylic piece over the hinges. Align the top piece so it will close on all sides of the box. Mark the hinge area on the outer side of the acrylic piece with a black erasable marker.

    • 7

Remove the top acrylic piece and open the hinges. Align the top acrylic piece to the hinges using the marks you made. Place a drop of acrylic glue on each of the hinges and corresponding acrylic. Press the acrylic and hinge together until they adhere. This should take a few minutes.

Close the display box and allow it to dry completely for 48 hours. Wipe off the marker marks with a damp cloth. Place the comic book inside the case.
