How Can I Seal My Comic Books?

Comic book protection is one of the most important aspects of comic collecting. Over time, comic book pages can fade, become brittle and fall away from their stapled bindings. According the the United States Library of Congress, Mylar, a Dupont owned trademark, is the preferred material for protecting valuable documents. Mylar is also the industry standard for comic preservation.

Instructions

    • 1

Place your comics one at a time into Mylar Type D plastic sleeves. Slide a cardboard backing sheet in beneath your comic for support. If you aren't planning to display your comic, you can put another cardboard backing sheet on top of the comic.

Run your hand over the Mylar bag until you have it as flat as you can get it. This will ensure you minimize the air inside the bag. Fold the outside flap down while continuing to flatten the Mylar sleeve, keeping the air out until you have the flap flat against the surface of the Mylar sleeve.

Place a piece of tape all the way across the flap. Run your finger over the tape to ensure it is free of air bubbles, completely keeping air out of the Mylar sleeve.

Store your comic in a comic display box, standing up and resting against other comics. Avoid stacking your comics. Place the box in a cool, dry environment.
