How to Collect Vintage Marvel Star Wars Comic Books

The first "Star Wars" comic series ran from 1977 to 1986. Marvel Comics owned the rights to publish the "Star Wars" comics at the time and continued to publish original "Star Wars" stories for a total of 107 issues. Whether you call yourself a comic book fan, a "Star Wars" fan or both, you can collect vintage Marvel "Star Wars" comic books. The comics present an original story beyond the movies; the books may also continue to increase in value as they become more and more scarce.

Instructions

    • 1

Look for issues online, at comic stores and at comic conventions. Because the issues are long out-of-print, you will find vintage Marvel "Star Wars" comics only in specialty stores and at auction houses. Online comic stores and auction websites sell vintage comic issues. Some comic stores may be able to secure vintage issues for you. Attend comic conventions as well; stores from across the country congregate in convention centers and put their older issues up for sale.

    • 2

Search for an entire collection. If you have no Marvel "Star Wars" comics yet, or you have less than half of the run currently, take advantage of an entire collection of the books for sale at once. The price may be high, but if you intend to collect all of the issues eventually, you will likely save money with the full set. This will also allow you to get your hands on rare issues, such as the first issue, all at once. You can always sell any duplicate issues you have to earn back some money.

    • 3

Look for the lack of a "Reprint" label. If you want a more valuable collection of vintage Marvel "Star Wars" comics, do not buy any reprints. You can easily tell which issues are reprints -- just look for the word "Reprint" on the cover. Conversely, if you are more concerned with the story of the comics and not the value, you can save a lot of money if you buy reprints instead of original print issues.

Store your comic books properly. The older a comic issue is, the more likely it is to become yellowed and decayed. Store your comics on acid-free comic book boards in mylar bags. Put the bagged comics in boxes designed specifically for comic books so that the books do not move around and bend. Put your boxes in a temperature-controlled, moisture-free area out of direct sunlight. Avoid areas such as the basement, attic or garage.
