The cartoonist Ernie Bushmiller wrote the comic strip "Nancy" in the minimalist tradition, featuring simple drawings and punch lines that made it easy to read. The strip first appeared in 1922 under the name "Fritzi Ritz." Bushmiller picked it up three years later and introduced Nancy as the niece of the flapper Fritzi.
