Learn How to Properly Grade Comic Books
Get an up to date comic book grading guide. These guides will tell you just how much you can expect to get for various comic books and how a particular comic book's grade will affect its value. The Official Overstreet Comic Book Grading Guide is a good resource to get you started.
Learn the different grades of comic books and what they mean. Comic books are graded according to their condition. Comic books may fall into one of the following grades: mint, near mint, very fine, fine, very good, good, fair and poor. Use the Comic Book Grading Guide online to learn what each of these grades means (see Resources below).
Practice grading your comic books. Using your price guide and your new knowledge of the various comic book grades, get out a few of your favorite comic books and assign grades to them. Be sure to examine each comic in detail, looking for even the tiniest flaws. Small flaws can make a big difference in the grade of a comic book.
Compare your comic books to others of the same kind. For example, if you have Spiderman Issueĺand you know of someone else who has this same issue, see if you can get together to compare your comics. By seeing the condition someone else's issue is in, you can get a better idea of how yours stacks up. This will help you assign it a more accurate grade.
Hire a professional grading service. These are a sure-fire way of getting an appropriate grade for your comic book. However, these services can be expensive and are usually only cost-effective if you are dealing with extremely rare and unique comics. CGC Comics offers a professional grading service (see Resources below).
