How to Attach Arrowheads to a Backboard

Arrowheads are an ancient tool used to tip arrows. They were also sometimes used to create hand-held tools like axes. Collectors search for arrowheads in areas where Native Americans were known to have lived. These centuries-old items should be well kept. If you are an avid arrowhead collector, then you understand the importance of keeping them safe. It's possible to keep them safe in a glass display box, but attaching your arrowheads to the backboard may prove difficult. There are, however, several easy ways to attach your arrowheads to a backboard.

Things You'll Need

  • Glass display
  • Cardboard backboard
  • Felt
  • Stapler
  • Scissors
  • Craft glue
  • Hook-and-Loop Fasteners
  • Safety pin
  • Wire
  • Wire cutters

Instructions

  1. Using Hook-and-Loop Fasteners

    • 1

Take out the cardboard insert from your glass frame display. If your frame doesn't have a cardboard insert, you will need to make one. Measure the inside of your display frame where the glass is, and cut out a piece of cardboard to fit.

    • 2

Lay a piece of felt over one side of the piece of cardboard. Staple the felt in place. Staple at each corner and around the edges. Use a pair of scissors to trim off excess felt around the edge of the cardboard.

    • 3

Cut off a piece of hook-and-loop fastener to fit on the back of one of your arrowheads. You only need the side that has the sticky loops. Be sure it doesn't show on the other side of the arrowhead. Use craft glue to glue the piece of fastener to the back of the arrowhead. Allow the glue to dry.

    • 4

Glue the fasteners onto the backs of your other arrowheads. Allow the glue to completely dry. Pick up the arrowheads and stick them to the felt. They should remain in place.

    Using Wire

    • 5

Remove the cardboard insert from your glass frame display. If you have no insert, you must make your own. Cut a piece of cardboard to fit the inside of your frame.

    • 6

Cover the cardboard piece with a layer of felt. Staple the felt in place by stapling around the edges and in the corners. Trim off excess felt around the edges using a pair of scissors.

    • 7

Lay one of your arrowheads down on the felted backboard. Lay it where you want it placed for the display. Pick up an open safety pin and create a small hole next to the arrowhead. Create a hole in the bottom nook of the arrowhead if your arrowhead has nooks cut into it. Make another small hole with the safety pin, on the other side of the arrowhead. This is where your wire will go.

    • 8

Cut off a small piece of wire using wire cutters. Stick each end of the wire through the holes from the face of the backboard. You may have to make the holes slightly larger if your wire doesn't fit through. Use a large sewing or crochet pin to make the hole bigger. The wire will sit across the top of the arrowhead.

    • 9

Pull the ends of the wire through and wrap the ends together as would tie a twist tie. Lay the ends of the wire against the back of the board.

    • 10

Turn your board back over and create two more holes on either side of your arrowhead. This time move toward the top of the arrowhead. Stick your wire through the holes from the face of the board. The two ends will stick through on the back of the board. Tie it off at the back of the board, just as you did with the wire lower down on the arrowhead. The only wire that will be showing on the front of the board is the part setting across the arrowhead, holding it in place.
