How to Hunt for Shark Teeth

Sharks have hundreds of teeth, which they are constantly wearing out and losing. Sinking to the bottom of the sea, these lost teeth become fossilized, turning a dark black or gray color. Most of the shark teeth you find on the beach are millions of years old. Eventually the shark teeth wash ashore with the tide, where they can be discovered and collected by beach-goers. Fossilized shark teeth of all sizes, from different species of shark, can be discovered with time and patience on a relaxing day at the beach.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit the beach during a low tide and walk along the water’s edge while keeping a look out for shark teeth. You can increase your chances of finding a shark tooth by beginning your search when the tide is strongest during new or full moons or after a storm when the wind has disturbed the sand. Examine an area of the beach where a significant amount of shells or debris has been washed ashore because shark teeth may also be present.

    • 2

Begin your excavation by shoveling sand in to a bucket. You can either examine the sand by hand for shark teeth or by pouring the sand into the sifter and gently sifting the sand. The sand will wash through the sifter, leaving the shark teeth behind. Multiple attempts may be required to find the shark teeth.

    • 3

Wade out into the water to sandbars near the coast during the low tide. Shark teeth are often found in and around sandbars. As you wade out into the water you may also be able to feel the shark teeth in the sand on your feet as you walk because the shark teeth are still sharp.

    • 4

Snorkel for shark teeth when the water is clear and calm. As you snorkel through the water, run your fingers through the sand below; you may be able to feel the shark teeth in the sand. Alternatively, kicking up the sand with your feet will expose the shark teeth hidden below the surface. Dive deep underwater to take a closer look at the ocean floor and dig up the sand with your hands to find shark teeth beneath.
