The date a rifle was made can affect not only resale value, but when and where it can be sold. Depending on state laws, many guns made before 1899 are considered antiques and therefore not actual firearms, which changes the rules about who can buy them and whether they can be shipped across state lines. Correctly dating your firearm will allow you to know the correct monetary worth and avoid any legal problems regarding the buying and selling of your weapon.

  If you cannot locate a serial number on an antique rifle, use the flashlight for any identifying marks or the manufacturer's name. Then contact the manufacturer directly regarding your firearm.
