How to Read a Five MOA Range Finder Scope

Your five MOA range finder scope can help you quickly determine your range to target. Minutes of Angle (MOA) are the degrees of change necessary to the trajectory of the bullet for varying ranges. The five MOA range finder scope has already been calibrated for these changes and allows you to quickly adjust your sight for different ranges. Your scope has ranging marks, indicating progressively higher MOAs, along the scope's crosshairs that allow you to quickly determine your range to target. To use your scope, you must know the size of your target in inches and have knowledge of a simple math formula.

Instructions

    • 1

Aim at a target of known size and line up the bottom of your target with the horizontal scope's crosshair.

    • 2

Count the number of ranging marks to the top of the target. The ranging marks indicate, in ascending order, two MOA, three MOA, four MOA and five MOA.

    • 3

Divide the height of the target by the MOA value and multiply the answer by 100; the answer is your range to target in yards. For example, suppose your target is 36 inches tall (3 feet) and the top of your target is at the four MOA range mark; then your equation would be: 36 ÷ 4 = 9 and 9 x 100 = 900. So your range to target is 900 yards.
