How to Remove Black Powder From Bullets

Bullets are fascinating items that many people enjoy collecting to display in their homes or to make jewelry and other crafts. A live round is an unpredictable item that should never be stored in your home, as it could easily ignite and the bullet could discharge, killing or injuring someone. The round should be disassembled, which can also be dangerous and should only be done by using a bullet puller, which is the proper tool to remove the bullet and powder from a loaded round of ammunition.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the loaded round of ammunition into a bullet puller.

    • 2

Tap the bullet puller against a hard surface, such as a piece of wood. This will separate the bullet, powder and case of the round.

    • 3

Empty the bullet puller onto a table or other solid surface.

    • 4

Scoop the bullet powder onto a plate or into a container.

    • 5

Dispose of the bullet powder by scattering it over your lawn or dumping it into a potted plant. The nitrogen in the powder will fertilize your lawn or plant as it safely decomposes.
