How Can I Tell If My WASR10/63 Has a Threaded Barrel?

The WASR 10 is the Romanian version of the ubiquitous AK-47. Semiautomatic versions are available for purchase in the United States. It shoots a 7.62X39 Russian cartridge and comes with a 30-round detachable magazine. The unloaded weight is 6.9 lbs. The WASR is inexpensive, and as an AK variant, reliable under extreme conditions. Threaded barrels on a WASR allow attachment additions such as flash suppressors and silencers. Some states have banned threaded barrels.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the magazine and chamber the rifle several times.

    • 2

Open the bolt and look into the chamber to visually check to see if it is empty.

    • 3

Stick a finger into the chamber to manually ensure there is no cartridge in there.

    • 4

Stick your finger into the front of the muzzle. If it feels smooth the first inch or two into the barrel, the WASR does not have a threaded barrel. If you feel threads just inside the barrel and extending down the barrel for an inch, the barrel is threaded.
