How to Reblue Rust Spots on a Smith K-22

The Smith and Wesson K-22 -- first introduced during the Prohibition era -- is a popular gun with well-heeled hunters. As with any gun though, time and exposure to the elements leads to rust spots. Smooth out the small spots of rust, and reapply a coat of gun bluing.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Dab a small amount of gun oil on the rust spot. Rub out the rust with fine steel-wool or fine sandpaper. Rub in gentle strokes, applying more oil until the rust is removed. Remove scratches or pits.

    • 2

Wipe the area clean with a cotton cloth. Degrease the area with naval jelly or alcohol. Wipe the area with a clean cotton cloth.

    • 3

Apply gun bluing to a 2- to 3-inch area with a clean cloth. Allow the bluing to set; wipe away any excess with a clean, cotton cloth. The finish appears dull once the bluing dries and sets.

    • 4

Gently buff the newly applied gun blue with No. 0000 steel wool. Buff the gun bluing to a shine.
