Parts of a Pedersoli Gun

Historical warfare, civil war reenactments and historical firearms have their share of fanatics, and for these people, a Davide Pedersoli &C gun could be a highly treasured piece of gear. Civil war reenactments would not work well with badly maintained gear, enthusiasts have to take care of their equipment. Knowing the basic parts of a Pedersoli gun, such as a Springfield Model 1861 Musket, is important knowledge for good maintenance.
  1. Barrel

    • The barrel is basically a metal tube through which the bullet is fired. The Springfield Model 1861 made by Pedersoli has a barrel that is 1.01 m or 39-3/4 inches long. It can accommodate a .58 caliber bullet.

    Ramrod

    • The ramrod is a long piece of metal a musket user will use to load black powder and cartridge into the barrel. A ramrod is kept in a rammer slot in the stock after use. Users have to take care when using a ramrod as it can be accidentally placed inside the barrel instead of the rammer slot and can be shot like a harpoon.

    Bands

    • Bands are metal rings that fix the barrel into the stock and keep it in place during use. The Springfied Model 1861 has three bands (front, middle and rear bands), a band stud and a band spring.

    Breech

    • The breech is the end of the barrel attached to the action. The Pedersoli musket example has a breech plug that directly interfaces with the barrel and is attached to the stock with a tang screw.

    Front and Rear Sights

    • The Pedersoli Springfied Model 1861 has front and rear sights. These sights are aligned to aim at a target prior to shooting.

    Hammer

    • The hammer is the part of the rifle that ignites the black powder to cause the gun to fire a bullet or projectile. Like all firearms, the Pedersoli Springfied Model 1861 has a hammer fixed by a hammer screw into place and activated by the trigger.

    Lock

    • The lock holds the triggering mechanism into place. The Pedersoli Springfied Model 1861 has lock components, such as a lock plate, hammer spring, the hammer itself, a mainspring pin, tumbler and tumbler pin, a sear spring and sear spring screw, a bridle, the bridle reference pin, the bridle screw and a lock plate assembly.

    Trigger and Trigger Guard

    • The trigger is the part that releases the fully cocked hammer to ignite the black powder and cause the rifle to shoot a bullet. Some of this particular musket's trigger components include a trigger plate, the trigger itself and the trigger screw. A C-shaped piece of metal called a trigger guard is also present.

    Stock

    • The stock is the wooden component of the Pedersoli Springfied Model 1861 where all the metal components of the gun are fixed into place to build a completed weapon. The rear part of the stock is the butt and the heel is the portion of the stock that is directly in place at the marksman's shoulder marksman during shooting.
