How to Make Gun Cases

Gun cases are used to display collectible or valuable firearms such as pistols. They are made out of hardwoods like oak and have a removable glass top to access the pistol. Gun cases like these can be used at home for the gun that has sentimental value or it can also be used in stores to display a rare pistol that is for sale. Gun cases like these will also protect the pistols from dust. The design for these types of gun cases is similar to many types of display cases and can be built in a few hours spent at a workbench.

Instructions

    • 1

Raise the blade on the table saw so it is 1/2-inch above the table and position the fence 3/8 inch away from the blade. Run each 12-inch board across the blade while keeping the 12-inch edge against the fence.

    • 2

Set each 12-inch board on edge parallel with the grooves facing each other and 3-1/2 inches above the ground. Space the boards 10 inches apart. Set the 10-inch boards perpendicularly between them so they're spaced 10 inches apart. The corners should be flush with these four boards. Drill four 3/32-inch pilot holes through each 12-inch board so two enter each end of the 10-inch boards. Drill a 1/4-inch deep countersink hole in each of the pilot holes on the 12-inch boards. Screw the boards together using the pilot holes as a guide. Drill pilot holes for every screwing application in this project.

    • 3

Turn the frame over so the grooves are 3/8 inch away from the ground. Lay the plywood on top of the board so the edges are flush. Screw the plywood to the boards using four screws, one for each corner.

    • 4

Apply the wood putty to the holes surrounding the eight screw heads and let dry. Sand the case with the medium-grade and fine-grade sandpaper and wipe clean using your tack cloth. Coat your case with the wood stain and let dry according to instructions.

    • 5

Slide your glass sheet into the grooves provided by the 12-inch boards.
