How to Sight in a Simmons Scope on a 270

Rifles chambered to use .270 caliber bullets -- such as the Remington model 700 --are excellent choices for deer hunting. Accuracy is often enhanced by mounting a Simmons scope. These scopes are available in fixed and variable power-magnification settings. Sighting-in the scope aligns your point-of aim with the bullet's projected point-of-impact.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare a target at a distance of approximately 100 yards.

    • 2

Load your rifle. Take three, carefully aimed and controlled shots at the center of your target. Determine the center of your shot group, and estimate the necessary correction to "move" the group to the center of the target. If your shot group is 1 inch below and 1 inch to the right of the center of your target, your adjustment must be 1 inch up and 1 inch to the left.

    • 3

Adjust the scope's windage and elevation dials to make the required corrections. The dials are marked with the calibrated value of each click. Type "C" scopes are designed to move the reticles 1/4-inch per click at 100 yards. Type "D" scopes move the recticles 1/2-inch per click add 100 yards. Shoot another three bullets at the target after making corrections. Note the location of the shot group, and make necessary corrections.
