How to Make Metal Pistol Targets

Using metal targets for practicing with your pistol can provide you with a consistent target, which, unlike paper targets, doesn't need to be changed between practice rounds. Metal targets generally provide you with an indication that you have hit your target. When using metal targets there's always a risk of ricochet, so set up your target taking this risk into consideration. Set up your target in an area surrounded by a sufficient backdrop to stop the bullet after it has hit the target.

Things You'll Need

  • 2, 4-inch tall stakes
  • Mallet
  • Drill
  • 1/8 drill bit
  • 2, 1-foot bungee cords with hooks at each end
  • 6-inch square metal surface (about 1/8-inch thick).

Instructions

    • 1

Drive your two garden stakes straight into the ground about 2 feet apart using the mallet. The garden stakes are designed for installing chicken wire and should have holes and hooks along their length; it's these holes that you will be using to set up your target.

    • 2

Drill holes into the top two corners of your metal target using a 1/8-inch drill bit; the holes -- one in each corner -- should be about 1/4 inch in from the top and side of the metal target.

    • 3

Attach one end of a bungee cord to the top of a garden stake by placing the hook through the hole on top of the stake. Put the hook on the other end of the bungee cord through a hole in the corner of your target. Repeat the procedure for the other side of the target. Your target should now be hanging suspended between the stakes.
