How to Drill a PU Scope Mount

Mosin-Nagant rifles were the primary infantry rifles of the Soviet army during the Second World War. The rifle was also used as a sniper rifle with great success. The PU scope mount was specifically designed for Mosin-Nagant sniper rifles. You can configure your Mosin-Nagant rifle to accept a PU scope mount by drilling two screw holes into the rifle's upper receiver.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the bolt from your Mosin rifle and place the mount in position along the side of the upper receiver. Insert your pin punch into the mount screw holes and mark the locations that need to be drilled. Remove the mount.

    • 2

Use your drill with a 3/16-inch drill bit to drill two holes into the side of the upper receiver. Make sure to drill the holes as straight as possible.

    • 3

Attach your 3/16-inch tap to your hand tap and apply honing oil to the tap. Tapping screw holes requires a delicate touch; do not use a drill to tap these holes.

    • 4

Place your tap on top of the hole and gently begin to turn the hand tap clockwise. Turn your tap back one-eighth of a revolution for every quarter turn to allow the metal from the threads to break free (not doing so can cause the tap to break). Once you have completed tapping your screw holes, remove the tap.
