How to Get a Screw Out of a Scope Ring

Telescopic sights -- or scopes -- have been used on rifles since the American Civil War; they are a common feature on hunting rifles, combat weapons and handguns. A scope must be mounted on top of the rifle; the mount typically utilizes scope rings to hold the scope in place. Scope rings hold the scope to the mount at the front and back, and are secured with screws on each side.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any ammunition clips and bullets from the chamber. Lay out a towel on your workbench to prevent damage to the finish on the rifle.

    • 2

Look at the scope rings from the top. Select a screwdriver that fits the scope rings exactly; this prevents damage to the scope or the screws. The proper screwdriver is often supplied with the scope mount.

    • 3

Grasp the scope and mount firmly with one hand. Loosen one of the scope ring screws. Loosen each screw -- on both rings -- before complete removal. This prevents damage to the scope.

    • 4

Remove each screw completely. Set the screws to the side.
