How to Remove the Front Sight of the Norinco MAK-90

The Norinco MAK-90 is a variation of the AK-47; it was produced in response to the gun-control bill of 1989 that banned the import of rifles with pistol grips. The MAK -90 has a modified stock with a thumb hole instead of a pistol grip; the weapon is otherwise identical to a traditional AK-47. The front sights of the AK-47 were installed by placing the shroud of the sight over the barrel, and locking it in place with a hydraulic press.

Instructions

    • 1

Disassemble your MAK-90 rifle. Place the barrel in a vise so the top of the sight is pointed upward; this allows free access to both sides of the sight. Pad the sides of the barrel so they are not damaged by the vise.

    • 2

Cut a slot along the length of the sight -- parallel to the barrel -- with your cutting tool. The slot must be deep enough to almost contact the barrel. Cut a slot on the other side of the sight. Avoid contacting the barrel with your cutting tool.

    • 3

Insert your chisel in the bottom half of a slot; strike it with your hammer to break off the bottom half. The sight will fall off the barrel once the slots pop open.

    • 4

Remove the barrel from the vise.
