How to Take Off a Bayonet Spike

Bayonets have been used with military firearms for centuries, and continue to be a component of military training and doctrine. A bayonet affixes to the end of a rifle's barrel, and secures using a button or a twisting motion. Bayonet spikes are of an older design than bladed bayonets, and attach to bolt-action rifles. Most World War I and World War II era rifles use spike bayonets. Some rifles, like the Mosin-Nagant M-44, have a bayonet that's an integral part of the firearm, and others, like the Mosin-Nagant m91/30, have removable bayonets.

Instructions

    • 1
The SKS uses an attached bayonet that should not be removed.

Unload your firearm, and verify that there are no rounds in the chamber.

    • 2

Depress the removal button located at the base of the bayonet, if your bayonet does not require any twisting action.

    • 3

Slide the bayonet away from the receiver until it is removed from the barrel.

    • 4

Reattach the bayonet by sliding the barrel ring of the bayonet onto the barrel, and then pull it down into the bayonet lug. You may have to depress the button to attach it.

    • 5

Depress the button and twist, if your bayonet uses a twisting action to secure it to the rifle. Many older rifles use this twist to secure it thoroughly, and they can be harder to remove and attach than the button-locking type.

    • 6

Use the rubber mallet, and tap the bayonet lightly until it's set at a 90-degree angle to its locked position. Tap it again on the bottom of the bayonet, closest to the barrel, to slide it off.
