How to Put a Chip McCormick Trigger on an AR-15

You demand quality from your firearms. You want accuracy, reliability and a rifle that's simply easy to use. That's why you bought a quality AR-15 rifle. Unfortunately, factory-assembled triggers rarely offer the same crisp trigger-pull as custom match-grade trigger jobs. The Chip McCormick match-grade trigger offers the same workmanship that you might find at a gunsmith, but with an at-home drop-in installation. Thanks to the modular nature of the AR-15, at-home customization of the rifle is cost-effective with after-market accessories.

Instructions

  1. Disassembly

    • 1

Push in the takedown pin just behind the safety as far as possible, and pull the upper receiver away from the lower. Push in the front pivot pin to separate them completely.

    • 2

Remove the screw on the inside of the pistol grip and slowly pull it away from the receiver. Be sure to keep the small spring and the detent on the front of the grip in a safe place, because they're quite small.

    • 3

Remove the safety; it pulls straight out of the receiver.

    • 4

Tap the hammer pin and the trigger pin out of the receiver, and remove the trigger assembly. These two pins are directly above the trigger group.

    • 5

Clean any excess oil off the parts and set them aside.

    Installation and Assembly

    • 6

Cock the new trigger group by pulling the hammer back completely, and then drop the assembly into the lower receiver.

    • 7

Replace the trigger and hammer pins.

    • 8

Insert the safety selector by pushing it into the receiver.

    • 9

Replace the detent and the spring; make sure that the spring inserts into the grip, and secure the grip by screwing it into the lower receiver.

    • 10

Check the functioning of the new trigger group. The safety selector should prevent the hammer from releasing if it's set to 'safe,' and should release when the selector is set to 'semi.'
