How to Bump Fire a Semi Auto

Bump firing simulates firing a fully-automatic weapon with a semi-automatic firearm. As of May 2011, it's the only legal way to fire a weapon in a near fully-automatic mode without a federal firearms license. Bump firing can be done to most semi-automatic rifles; you use the recoil of the firearm and a loose grip on the trigger. It's a learned skill and it's best to practice, but the process is simple. You can bump fire from either your hip or shoulder.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate a shooting range which will allow you to bump fire your weapon, or use private property. Many gun ranges do not allow bump firing.

    • 2

Attach the rubber band around the back of the trigger, wrap it around the front of the magazine well, then loop the band around the trigger once again. If you don't have a rifle with an extended magazine well, find another section or part to wrap the rubber band around.

    • 3

Shoulder your rifle, and hold it normally. Remove your hand from the grip and set your finger lightly on the trigger. Pull the rifle slightly away from your shoulder, so that the trigger is pulled by you pushing the rifle forward until the weapon fires.

As you fire, the recoil forces the weapon back into your shoulder. The rubber band resets the trigger faster than the trigger assembly's spring, so when you set the rifle in position, it fires immediately. Keep the weapon as stable as possible with your off hand; it might help to use a pistol-style fore-grip.
