Techniques for Mounting Rifle Scopes

There are a variety of techniques that you can use to secure a scope to your rifle. Most scope ring mounting techniques give you the option of removing, or reattaching, the scope relatively quickly, while others semi-permanently attach to your rifle and are more difficult to alter. When choosing your mounting system, consider the type of weapon you are installing the scope on.
  1. Rail Mount System

    • Perhaps the most common technique for mounting a rifle scope is the use of a rail mount system. Rail mounts are typically found on military type weapons and often integrated into the body of the weapon. The rail mount features a rail with dovetailed edges and slots cut across the rail. The scope rings are equipped with brackets at their base that secure around the edges of the rail.

    Universal Scope Mounts

    • Universal scope mounts are commonly found on hunting rifles, particularly bolt-action rifles. This system features mounting bases that attach directly on top of your rifle's upper receiver. The scope rings are then inserted into the top of the bases and seated by twisting the rings into position. The scope rings are then installed onto the scope rings.

    Detachable Lever Style Scope Mounts

    • Detachable scope mounts are similar to universal scope mounts, but allow you to remove the scope from the rifle very quickly. Like the universal scope mount, the system features mounting bases that attach directly to your rifle; however, these bases have quick-disconnect levers. The rings are attached by placing the ends into the bases and locking the levers.

    Detachable Twist-Off Mounts

    • Detachable twist-off mounts are very similar to detachable lever style mounts; however, they only feature a locking lever on the rear base. This system also features a mounting base attached directly to your rifle. The scope is attached by placing the front scope ring base into the mount at a 90-degree angle, twisting the scope into position and locking the rear scope ring into place with a retention lever.
