How to Set a Scope on a Muzzleloader

Hunting with a muzzle loader can be a challenging experience. You can greatly improve your accuracy by using a scope on your muzzle loading rifle. Sighting in a scope on a muzzle loader can be tricky if you're not consistent with the way you load your rifle. Modern factory ammunition is preset with the weight of the projectile and the amount of power used. When using a muzzle loader it's up to you to consistently add the same amount of powder to achieve a sense of consistency for where you hit the target.

Instructions

    • 1

Set up your target at a range of approximately 100 yards.

    • 2

Load your rifle, take careful aim at your target and fire a well controlled shot at your target. Repeat this process two more times and observe the location of the shot group on your target.

    • 3

Estimate the necessary correction that will move your shot group to align with your point of aim. For example, if your shot group is one inch below and one inch to the right of the center of your target, you'll need to adjust your scope one inch up and one inch to the left.

    • 4

Use the windage dial located on the right side of the scope, and the elevation adjustment dial located on the top of the scope to correct your crosshairs. Most scopes have adjustment values of 1/4 or 1/8 inch per click of the adjustment dials for a target at 100 yards, the value is usually marked on the dials. If your scope is adjustable by 1/4 inch increments, moving the crosshairs one inch would require four clicks.

    • 5

Fire another shot group at your target and evaluate the placement of the shot group in relation to the center of the target. Make further corrections as necessary.
