SKS rifles were used by the Soviet military in the early 1950s, before they were replaced by the AK-47. Surplus SKS rifles are popular among civilian shooters because of their reliability and relatively low cost. The SKS has an internal 10-round magazine which was intended to permanently stay with the weapon. The magazine was designed to be quickly removable, not for the purpose of reloading, but to make cleaning the weapon easier. Based on the design of the removable internal magazine, high capacity detachable magazines have been produced for the SKS rifle.
