How to Clean and Preserve an Old Leather Holster

Leather holsters are intended to protect your pistol from the elements; consequently, they suffer the brunt of these same elements. Restoring an old leather holster can be accomplished if the leather has not suffered from dry rot and the fibers of the leather are still pliable. Old gun leather can best be restored by using professional leather cleaning and conditioning solutions. For best results, treat your gun leather in a warm environment above 65 degrees Fahrenheit.

Instructions

    • 1

Apply a small amount of leather cleaner to a sponge or cloth and rub the cleaner into the leather until it lathers. Wipe off the foam with a damp sponge or cloth and dry with a towel.

    • 2

Apply your leather conditioner to a clean cloth or sponge and rub the conditioner into the leather. Wipe off any excess conditioner.

    • 3

Allow your holster at least 12 hours to absorb the conditioner naturally. Do not attempt to speed up the drying process with a hair dryer; the extra heat may damage the fibers of the leather.

    • 4

Repeat the process until you're satisfied with the appearance of the holster.
