EO Tech 552
The holographic sight chosen by the United States army, particularly the 10th Mountain and the Third Infantry divisions, is the EO Tech 552 Holographic Red Dot Sight. This sight has seen field use in Afghanistan and Iraq, and continues to be used by the military. The 552 functions well at both short and long ranges, and is not subject to parallax error.
EOTech 552 Ballistics
The EO Tech 552 is a holographic sight that is built to provide accurate targeting based on the ballistics of a 7.62 mm cartridge (.308 Winchester). The M1A scout rifle is chambered to use 7.62 mm ammunition. The majority of holographic sights are built around the ballistics of the 5.56 mm cartridge, which is commonly used in tactical weapons such as the AR-15. The larger bullet used by the M1A has different ballistic characteristics then the lighter 5.56 mm bullet.
Holographic Reticle
The sight features a hologram of a red reticle that is projected onto the sight window. The window is constructed of 3/16-inch laminate plastic that is shatterproof. The windage and elevation of the reticle is adjustable with two set screws located on the right side of the sight. The reticle moves 1/2inch per adjustment click for a target at 100 yards.
Power Source
The EO Tech 552 is powered by two AA batteries and is compatible with the disposable, rechargeable and lithium varieties of batteries. The operating time of the sight when using standard or rechargeable batteries is approximately 600 hours; when using lithium batteries the operational time nearly doubles to 1100 hours. The advantage of being powered by a AA batteries is accessibility; AA batteries are used universally, making battery replacement an easy task.
