Disassembly
Unload the rifle and turn on the safety. Disassembly requires the rifle to be set to "safe."
Make sure that the bolt is in the closed position.
Turn the lever near the receiver cover completely, and pull the cover away from the rifle. Remove the bolt carrier, the bolt and the recoil spring.
Unlatch the magazine and let it swing freely. Locate at the base of the trigger assembly a small metal button. Press the head of the Philips screwdriver into the button until it clicks or the trigger assembly lifts slightly. Pull the trigger assembly away from the rifle.
Pull the magazine housing out of the rifle.
Remove the barrel by pushing down on the furniture of the rifle, and then pushing the barrel forward.
Turn the lever on the right side of the gas piston to a perpendicular position. Carefully pull the gas piston away from the barrel; don't force the assembly. The operating rod is removed by rotating the lever the rest of the way; hold a finger against the opening, otherwise, the spring and the rod will fly across the room.
Cleaning and Reassembly
Wipe down each component of the rifle with a lubricated cloth; clean off as much residue as possible, and oil each part, inside and out.
Clean the barrel with the bore brush; coat the brush in solvent, and run the brush completely through the barrel before reversing direction. Follow up with an oiled cleaning patch, and run it through repeatedly. Remove the excess oil with a clean patch.
Lubricate the moving parts of the SKS thoroughly, and rack the slide to distribute the oil.
Reassemble the SKS in reverse order and check the functioning of the rifle by dry-firing it.
