How to Break Down a Colt 45 Combat Commander

The Colt 45 Combat Commander is a variation of the full-size Colt government model 1911 pistol. The Colt Commander is slightly smaller than the full-sized government model, with a 4 1/2-inch barrel and a magazine capacity of eight rounds. The pistol requires no special tools to be disassembled and breaks down exactly the same way as the full-size 1911. Before you begin to break down your Colt 45 Combat Commander, make absolutely sure that the weapon is unloaded.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the magazine by pressing the magazine release button on the left side of the pistol grip.

    • 2

Move the slide assembly to the rear approximately 1/4-inch and press the recoil spring plug, beneath the barrel, in enough to clear the bushing bearing.

    • 3

Turn the bearing clockwise and allow the spring to protrude from the front of the pistol. Remove the recoil plug.

    • 4

Pull the hammer to the full down position. Align the slide stop lug with the notch in the slide assembly and press the slide stop through the pistol from the right side. Push the slide assembly forward and separate it from the grip.

    • 5

Flip over the slide assembly and remove the recoil spring assembly. Separate the recoil guide from the spring.

    • 6

Rotate the barrel bushing counterclockwise and bring the barrel out of the front of the slide assembly. Separate the bushing from the barrel.
