How to Bore a Sight Scope Mounting

Bore sighting is a technique of sighting in your scope without having to shoot it. Bore sighting can be done visually on rifles that allow you to look straight through the barrel (such as bolt-action rifles) or with an optical or laser bore sighting device. The objective of bore sighting is to align the intersection of your scope's cross hairs with the projected point of impact, where the bullet will strike the target. Before bore sighting your rifle, check to make sure that it is unloaded.

Things You'll Need

  • Laser or optical bore sighter (unless visually bore-sighting)

Instructions

  1. Visual

    • 1

Prepare a target at the distance that you would like your scope sighted for. Approximately 100 yards is recommended.

    • 2

Remove your rifle's bolt so that you can look through the barrel from behind. Secure your rifle so that you can adjust the scope while keeping the rifle still. Placing sandbags on either side of the rifle is one method of accomplishing this.

    • 3

Look through the barrel and adjust the rifle so that the center of your target is visible through the barrel.

    • 4

Adjust the scope's cross hairs so they intersect on that spot. The scope elevation is adjusted by rotating the dial on the top of the scope clockwise for down or counterclockwise for up. The windage is adjusted by rotating the dial on the right side of the scope clockwise for left or counterclockwise for right.

    Laser

    • 5

Set up a target at approximately 100 yards.

    • 6

Place the stem at the bottom of the laser bore sighter securely down the barrel and aim at your target. Observe where the laser beam is striking the target; that is your projected point of impact.

    • 7

Adjust the scope cross hairs to intersect on the beam and remove the laser.

    Optical

    • 8

Attach the optical bore sighter to the end of the rifle barrel so the lens of the bore sighter is visible through the scope. Most modern optical bore sighters attach with magnets. Older models may have alignment rods that fit into the barrel.

    • 9

Look through your scope at the grid pattern on the bore sighter lens.

    • 10

Adjust the cross hairs to the center of the grid pattern and remove the bore sighter.
