Plastic Holsters
By far the most popular ankle holsters available today are made of plastic. Israeli holster maker Forbus produces an ankle holster with a plastic holster secured on a nylon belt that wraps around your ankle. These holsters feature a passive retention system that holds the weapon securely in place unless it is pulled in a direct line straight out of the holster.
Leather Holsters
Leather ankle holsters are high quality and hold your pistol in place with a metal snap. The pollsters feature a thumb break, meaning that you must unsnap the retention strap with your thumb before you can draw the weapon. Leather holsters typically are affixed to a nylon belt that is worn around your ankle.
Nylon Holsters
Nylon holsters, by manufacturers such as Uncle Mike's, are quality ankle holsters that will securely hold your Makarov and are generally comfortable to wear. The retention system on most nylon holsters is a nylon strap secured either by a snap or by Velcro. When purchasing a nylon ankle holster, make sure to inspect the quality of the nylon and the stitching holding the holster together.
Padding
When you're deciding on an ankle holster, comfort should be an important deciding factor. Given the location of the holster, it is important to have one that will not chafe against your leg and that securely holds the holster to your ankle. The best ankle holsters have padded linings made of suede and are secured around your ankle with Velcro.
