How to Tell if They Are AR-15 Feed Ramps

Feed ramps are a feature of AR-15 and M-16 rifles that helps to guide bullets into the chamber as the weapon loads. All AR-15/M-16 type rifles have feed ramps on the end of the barrel extension; however, the design has changed slightly on the M4 rifle. The M4 rifle is a shortened version of the M-16 rifle that is capable of full automatic fire. To prevent the weapon from jamming, manufacturers slightly widened the feed ramps on the M4. Some manufacturers have equipped their AR-15 rifles with M4 feed ramps.

Instructions

    • 1

Confirm that your weapon is unloaded , then remove the magazine. Separate the upper and lower receivers of your AR-15 rifle and remove the bolt.

    • 2

Turn the weapon over and examine the slots cut into the barrel extension, located at the end of the barrel where the bullets enter the chamber. These slots are the feed ramps.

    • 3

Determine whether the feed slots are rounded at the end or if they extend straight down. The rounded slots are traditional AR-15 feed ramps, and the straight slots are M4 type ramps. Having M4 type ramps is helpful during extremely fast rates of firing, but are really unnecessary on an AR-15 rifle, which is only capable of semi-automatic fire.
