How to Remove Heavy Rust From a Bayonet

A bayonet is a weapon that has been used in wars for hundred of years. The weapon has a sword, knife or dagger attached to the end of a rifle. Because most bayonets are hundreds of years old, they can be heavily rusted, if the owner has not maintained it. Many people collect bayonets or sell and trade them. For this to happen, the bayonet must be attractive in appearance and this means removing all of the rust without damaging weapon. Instructions

    • 1

Apply gun oil to the rusted areas of the bayonet with a cloth.

    • 2

Leave the oil on for several hours, or overnight. During this time, the oil will penetrate the rust, making it softer and easier to remove.

    • 3

Scrub off the rust using a fine steel wool pad. Use gentle motions, so as not to scratch the metal. In some places the metal maybe fragile, because of the heavy rust. Only scrub the parts of the bayonet that are rusty.

    • 4

Apply more gun oil to the bayonet, once all the rust is gone. Gun oil provides a protective barrier to the moisture that leads to the rusting of the metal.
