How to Refinish Glock Slides

The slide of a Glock handgun is treated with a tough, Tenifer finish. The finish can begin to wear down over time, particularly if you carry your Glock frequently. You can refinish the slide of your Glock pistol with a specially designed mixture. The lower receiver of the Glock is made of a polymer plastic which is impervious to wear; it does not require refinishing.

Things You'll Need

  • Firearm finish
  • Finish hardener
  • Firearm stripper/degreaser
  • Airbrush
  • Syringe
  • Fishing line or wire
  • 600-grit sandpaper
  • Eye protection, protective gloves and respirator

Instructions

    • 1

Unload your Glock pistol. Completely disassemble the weapon. Remove the front and rear sights, unless you are are sealing them with your new finish.

    • 2

Sand down the surface of your slide with 600-grit sandpaper. Your goal should be to smooth out any scratches or blemishes on the slide surface.

    • 3

Clean off the surface of the slide using stripper solution. Remove any carbon buildup or other debris from the slide.

    • 4

Hang the slide over your work area with wire or fishing line. Pass the line through the slide so that it is suspended in midair, giving you access to the entire surface.

    • 5

Measure the desired ratios of gun finish and hardener, and mix them in the airbrush fluid receptacle; the receptacle is removable. The ratio is approximately 10-to-14 mL of finish to 1 mL of hardener. Spread the mixture over the surface of your slide using the airbrush.

    • 6

Let the finish dry for at least 12 hours. Remove the slide from the line and reassemble your pistol.
