How to Remove an S&W and M&P Front Sight

The Smith and Wesson M and P -- the company's military and police line of handguns -- are lightweight, reliable and accurate in the hands of a trained shooter. The lower receivers of the pistols are made of polymer plastic impervious to corrosion; this gives the owner the option of sizing the grip by using one of three different sized grip-backs. The standard sights on the M and P pistol are tactical, three-dot sights, which are replaceable.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare a vise with cloth or cardboard padding. The padding protects the surface of the pistol's upper receiver from scratches.

    • 2

Verify that your pistol is unloaded; disassemble the weapon. Place the slide in the vice with the top downward, and the front sight unobstructed. Spray the front sight with penetrating oil; allow it to penetrate for at least one hour.

    • 3

Position your small, brass drift on the bottom surface of the front-sight. Angle it slightly away from the ejection port, so that the sight emerges on the side of the ejection port. Use your hammer to strike the brass drift, and knock out the front sight. Several blows will most likely be required. After the front side has been removed, loosen your vice and remove the slide.
