How to Disassemble a Nagant Lockwork

The Nagant revolver is a 7-round firearm adopted by the Russian government in 1895 and was used as a standard sidearm by Soviet troops until 1950. The firearm was designed by Emile and Leon Nagant, a pair of Belgian brothers whose name later became popularized by the Mosin-Nagant brand of firearms. Disassembling a Nagant revolver lockwork, which is the trigger mechanism, is a bit like figuring out a puzzle because of the intricate way the parts fit together.

Instructions

Check that the revolver is not loaded. Pull out the rod underneath the barrel as far as it will go, then swing the base of the pull rod to the side. With the pull rod out of the way, take out the bushing that holds the cylinder in place. Push out the cylinder to the right side of the firearm and remove it, then set it aside on a clean surface. Use gun oil and a cleaning rag if necessary to help remove stuck gun parts.

    • 2

Unscrew the side plate screw located on the right side of the revolver just above the pistol grip. Remove the side plate from the left side of the firearm. Pull the hammer back into the cocked position and locate an empty screw hole that is exposed when the hammer is properly cocked. Screw the side plate screw into the hole. Pull back on the trigger and the hammer will release on its own so you can pull it off with your fingers. Set the hammer on a clean surface. Release the trigger.

    • 3

Pull out the small metal actuator attached to the trigger using your fingers and set it aside. Pull the trigger out with your fingers and set it aside. Be sure to keep all gun parts in their proper order of removal so you can reassemble the firearm.

    • 4

Loosen the trigger guard screw about halfway. The trigger guard screw is located above the front end of the trigger guard. Pivot the lower portion of the trigger guard so that the top moves away from the screw. Lift the trigger guard away from the firearm and set it aside.

    • 5

Remove the hammer block, the next piece that is exposed when the trigger guard is out of the way. Finally, pivot the recoil plate out of the frame and lift it free. The lockwork is now completely disassembled. Replace all gun parts in reverse order to reassemble the weapon.
