Things You'll Need
Instructions
Determine the condition of your bayonet. Civil War bayonets in poor condition are more difficult to identify. Bayonets with minimal damage and wear typically have visible, engraved-number markings and a national insignia.
Analyze your bayonet for identifying markers. A legitimate Civil War bayonet from the Union usually has "U.S." engraved on the underside of the bayonet, and possibly a serial number. Confederate bayonets vary in markings. Make note of any special insignia on the bayonet. Photograph each marking for further documentation.
Consult a reference guide on Civil War history, or visit a credible antique dealer for more information. The U.S. Model 1855 Socket-Bayonet was most commonly used by Union troops. The Fayetteville Armory Rifle-Socket Bayonet was common among Confederate troops. Crudely-made bayonets -- fashioned by soldiers in the field who were short on supplies -- are sometimes discovered.
