How to Replace an M&P Front Sight

The lower receivers of Smith and Wesson Military and Police pistols are made of a tough. polymer plastic; this makes the pistols lightweight and impervious to corrosion. The pistols come standard with the buyer's option of three different grip-backs (the section on the back of a grip). Military and Police pistols are equipped with tactical, three-dot sights. The front sight can be replaced if the shooter desires to modify the weapon.

Instructions

    • 1

Disassemble your pistol. Separate the slide from the rest of the parts.

    • 2

Place the slide in a padded vise. Face the top of the slide downward so that the front sight is unobstructed. Spray the sight with penetrating oil. Let the oil penetrate for approximately one hour.

    • 3

Place the brass drift on the bottom of the front sight. Place the drift at a slight tilt that allows the front sight to angle toward the ejection port. Knock out the sight with a hammer. Several strong blows are typically required.

    • 4

Remove the slide from the vise, and turn it over. This allows access to the empty, front-sight slot. Secure the slide in the vise.

    • 5

Position your new sight in the slot. Place a small piece of wood over the top of the sight; tap it in place with your hammer. Remove the slide from the vice and reassemble your pistol.
