How to Fold a Russian SKS Bayonet

SKS rifles were the primary battle rifles of the Soviet army during the 1950s. Surplus SKS rifles are generally inexpensive and reliable and have become very popular with American shooters. The Russian SKS has a permanently attached folding bayonet that sits underneath the barrel, when in the folded position. The bayonet is locked in place (in both the fully extended or stowed positions) by a spring mechanism that presses up against the hilt of the bayonet.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the action of your SKS to make sure that the weapon is unloaded. Never attempt to fold the bayonet while the weapon is loaded.

    • 2

Pull back on the hilt of the bayonet, when the bayonet is in the extended position, and fold the bayonet downward and to the rear of the rifle. Lightly press the length of the bayonet against the bottom of the barrel; you will hear the spring mechanism click, locking the bayonet into the folded position.

    • 3

Pull the hilt of the bayonet, when the bayonet is in the folded position, toward the back of the rifle to release the spring mechanism. Rotate the bayonet downward and extend it in front of the barrel. The spring mechanism will lock it into place when you have fully extended the bayonet.
