How to Get Greater EER in Handgun Scopes

Placing a scope on your pistol can greatly increase your accuracy, particularly for precision shooting. Many hunting handguns with longer barrels are produced to be fully compatible with a scope mount. Since pistol scopes are held at a farther distance away from your eye than a rifle scope, it is necessary for them to be designed with an extended eye relief (EER). The extended eye relief of most pistol scopes is from 5 to 30 inches. The distance of the EER is directly tied to the scope's magnification setting.

Instructions

    • 1

Make sure that your pistol is unloaded. If you are just handling your pistol to determine and change the EER, then there's no need for a pistol to be loaded.

    • 2

Aim your pistol at a target to get a feel for the current distance of eye relief. When you observe your target at the eye relief distance, you should have a complete sight picture. The lowest amount of eye relief is at the highest magnification setting.

    • 3

Increase your extended eye relief by reducing the magnification setting on your scope. When your scope is set to the lowest magnification, the extended eye relief is at its maximum distance.
