How to Field Strip an M10 Ingram

Gordon B. Ingram developed the M10 in 1964. The M10, unofficially known as the "Mac 10," is a high-powered compact sub machine gun that utilizes a blow-back operational system to cycle rounds. The firing mode is capable of alternating from semi to fully automatic in a flip of a switch that is located on the left side of the frame. Chambered in the 9mm and the powerful .45 ACP, the firearm embodies a combination of conceal-ability, stopping power and silence. The Mac 10 gained recognition because of its revolutionary "wipe" type of silencer, but during the late 1970s, the U.S. banned the importation of suppressors, which eventually led to the demise of the M10.

Make sure the M10 is unloaded before proceeding. To do this, hold the M10 handle with one hand, while keeping your index finger away from the trigger, and with the other hand grasp the magazine and firmly push the magazine release button with your thumb. The magazine release button is located on the bottom, backside of the M10 handle. Also make sure the barrel is empty by pulling the charging handle back and visually checking the ejector port to make sure there isn't a live round loaded in the chamber.

Use a punch bit to remove the receiver pin from the M10 frame.

Hold the M10 with the right side facing up and you will see a small ring protruding out of the right side of the frame a few inches below the front sights. This is where the receiver pin is seated. Remove the receiver pin by poking a punch bit directly in the center of the small ring, and the receiver pin will pop out of the opposite (left) side of the frame. The receiver pin is what holds the upper receiver group in place. Some M10 configurations are built with a receiver pin catch that has to be pushed back before inserting the punch bit.

Grip the Ingram M10 handle with one hand and with your other hand, firmly grasp the upper receiver group and pull it up and away from the lower assembly. Look inside the top of the now exposed bottom receiver and make sure the hammer is cocked back. If for any reason it isn't, manually pull it back with your finger to put it in its cocked-back position.

Hold the rear of the upper receiver group with one hand, and with your other hand slide the charger handle to the rear. Twist the charging handle clockwise a few degrees to release it and pull it out of the bolt. This will free the recoil spring and the bolt assembly so it can be removed from the rear of the receiver. No further disassembly is needed for general field-stripping and cleaning.

To reassemble, carefully follow the field-stripping steps in reverse order.
