How to Install a Rear Peep Sight on a Mauser

Mauser rifles are popular surplus rifles that gained notoriety as the main German battle rifle during the Second World War. Mauser rifles were equipped with ladder-style peep sights that could be adjusted for range. Replacement peep sights are commercially available and are designed to simply replace the original sights. Replacing your rear peep sight requires no special modifications to your rifle. Before changing your rear sight, made absolutely sure that your rifle is unloaded.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the original rear sight by placing your pin punch against the retention pin (located on the left side of your rear sight) and lightly tapping it out with your hammer. This pin acts as a hinge for the sight. When the pin is out, press down on the sight and remove it from the sight base.

    • 2

Use a screwdriver to press in one of the spring loaded tabs at the bottom of your new sight and place the tab into the appropriate hole in the sight base (for example, the right-hand tab fits into the hole on the right side) that was previously occupied by the retention pin.

    • 3

Maneuver the depressed tab into position on the other hole; once the tab is aligned, it will snap into position to complete installation of the new rear peep sight.
