How to Remove a Saiga 7.62X39 Front Sight Shroud

The Saiga 7.62X39 is a variant of the AK-47 rifle. AK-47 rifles were built for quantity, not quality. That's not to say they're not reliable rifles -- they are -- but they were not built to be modified. The front sight shroud was installed by placing the shroud over the barrel and securing it in place with a hydraulic press. The front sight shroud can be removed with a hand-held cutting tool, a hammer and a little bit of skill. Before working on your Saiga rifle, always make sure that the weapon is unloaded.

Things You'll Need

  • Barrel vise
  • Hand-held cutting tool with the small cut off wheel (Dremel or similar tool)

Instructions

    • 1

Disassemble your rifle and secure your barrel in a vise with the top of the sight pointed upward. You should have free access to both sides of the shroud.

    • 2

Use your cutting tool to cut a slot all the way along the right side of the shroud. The slot should be deep enough to almost contact the barrel. Cut another slot on the left side. Try to cut the slots as deep as possible without damaging the barrel.

    • 3

Place the chisel on the bottom surface of one of the slots and use your hammer to break off the bottom half. Once the cuts pop open, the shroud will fall off the barrel.
