How to Fix a Remington 7400 Jam

Remington model 7400 rifles are semi-automatic, magazine-fed rifles that were produced in a variety of calibers. The Remington 7400 is generally a reliable rifle; however, like most semi-automatic rifles, occasionally the weapon may jam. The possibility of jamming (the failure of a spent shell casing to fully leave the action) can be greatly reduced by keeping your rifle clean. Should you encounter a jam, there are some simple steps you should follow.

Instructions

    • 1

Point your rifle in a safe direction, free of any people, animals or property. Keep the rifle pointed in this direction until you have cleared the rifle.

    • 2

Engage the safety. The safety is behind the trigger; when the safety is on, the red band should not be visible.

    • 3

Remove the magazine by pressing the magazine release latch on the right side of the rifle, located next to the magazine.

    • 4

Pull back on the operating handle. Usually any shell casings that are stuck in the action will fall out at this point. If necessary, manually remove any shell casings. Visually inspect the action to verify that it is clear.

    • 5

Once you clear the jam, you may reload your rifle. Clean the rifle as soon as possible.
