How to Mount a M16 Carry Handle Scope

The M-16 rifle has been the primary battle rifle of the United States military since the mid-1960s. The rifle is easily identifiable by the "carry-handle" positioned right over the weapon's bolt. The back end of the carry-handle is the location of the rear sight and also has a mounting hole drilled into it specifically for mounting a scope. The civilian version of the M-16 is the AR 15 and, like its military counterpart, it commonly comes with a carry handle compatible with a weaver-style rail scope mount.

  Confirm that your rifle is not loaded.

  Remove the round retention nut from the bolt protruding from the bottom of the rail mount. Observe the slanted groove cut into the side of the rail mount and place the low end of the slant over the front end of the carry handle.

  Insert the retention bolt through the hole on top of the carry handle. The mount will fit into position. Put the round retention nut back on the bolt and tighten. You have just installed a rail mount.

  Loosen the retention screws on the bottom of the scope rings and widen the mounting bracket. Place the scope on top of the rail mount with the sides of the mounting bracket over the edges of the mount. Tighten the retention screws to secure the scope to the mount.
